Me- (takes a deep breath)ok, I had just graduated, I was 18 and glad to be on my own. Little did I know that life alone is difficult. Well I met this guy, Steven, and he was so sweet, and he swept me off my feet. I thought he was the one. Well, I got pregnant. When we told our parents they said that we either had to get married or live together like a married couple, we chose just to live with each other until we had enough money for a real wedding. It worked for a while, until Laci was born. She was so precious, so small. I dont know what happened to Steven, but he changed, for the worse. He would go out and get drunk and come home and (looks at Kevin, then at the floor) then he would rape me, I was so afraid to leave Laci with him that I took her to work everyday. He would beat me and yell at me, telling me I was worthless and that having Laci was a mistake. I put up with it, until Laci turned one. It was the day of her birthday, I was getting dressed when I heard a scream. I ran into the kitchen to find Steven slapping Laci across the face and yelling at her that she was a mistake. I ran over and pulled him off of her, grabbed Laci and ran out the door. I ran down the stairs and made it to the street before he caught us. He shoved me down on the sidewalk and was hitting me in the face yelling that I wasnt going anywhere that I was his and that he could do what he wanted with me and Laci. I could hear Laci crying next to me, then a cop car pulled up and pulled Steven off of me. They took him away and I havent seen him since that day. As far as I know he still lives in that apartment in Atlanta, Georgia. My friends, especially Meredith since she already lived near here, helped move us down here. And ive been living here ever since. (by now she is in tears, hugging her knees to her chest and trying to calm herself down, but she cant seem to get a grip)
Kevin- (looks at her, then mover closer putting his arm around her and pulls her closer to him) Jennifer, im so sorry!
Me- (still crying, but now is resting her head on his chest) its just that every guy since has changed and not wanted to stay with me after they found out about Laci. Then tonight when I saw the expression on your face when Laci yelled mommy and I answered, I thought you were going to be the same as all the rest.
Kevin-(just holds her closer in his arms)
I cant believe I just told Kevin all about my life! Gosh jen, youve only known the guy a week! Oh well, at least now he knows now! He held me in his arms while I cried, eventually I cried myself to sleep in his arms on my living room couch.
