Maternity portraiture is the one of the newest & largest business trends that photography has seen in ages. It all started with that Demi Moore (photographer Annie Leibovitz) cover in Vanity Fair in 1991 & it has grown tremendously with new creativity and techniques.

Here are some definite DO’s & DON’Ts with maternity portraits.

1. Be comfortable! Although maternity portraits are best to be taken within a month of your due date (the closer to the due date the better) and that time period is probably a uncomfortable moment in time its best to understand your body, know what positions are more comfortable than others & be open to sharing that with your photographer. Example: If you’re having constant cramping in your legs when you sit or lay down too long, make sure the photographer understands that you need to change poses more often than not. If you’re in pain, the photos will reflect that.

2. Feel beautiful! If your going to be investing in maternity photos (even home-made ones) you want to feel pretty going into them. Splurge & get your hair done, put make-up on - and remember to bring concealer with you to your photo shoot. Its true that Photoshop can get rid of most stretch marks but so can concealer - and when you pamper yourself, that glow will come thru in your photographs.

3 Share your thoughts! If you have certain ideas of poses, props, or themes - share them with your photographer. A photographer should be open to trying out your ideas - its makes your photo session more special when you take a vested interest.

4. Props - Props are fun to use, especially with maternity shots (flowers, drapes, etc) but make sure your props don’t overshadow the major prop - your glowing, beautiful belly.

5. Outdoor portraits - If you are going to go outdoors for your maternity session make sure its during the best time of the day for outdoor portraits - twilight or dawn. Also ask your photographer if they have a portable reflector/diffuser to use - those tools really do help to regulate the lighting outdoors that can prevent sunspots, streaks, or squinting.

6. Finally, Have Fun! This is a truly special & unique time in your life - let it be your 1st child or your 10th. Enjoy this moment - include the people that you want to be apart of this moment. Friends, children, your spouse or significant other. Be goofy, try new things - and make sure you trust your photographer - make sure it’s your story that is being told thru these photographs.

    Maternity Portraits?
Maternity Portraits…does anyone know of any studios in L.A.?
I’m trying to surprise my pregnant wife by taking her to a portrait studio somewhere here in L.A., where i’m hoping she can take some pro studio pictures. She’s constantly getting down on herself about not feeling beautiful, and i think her weight gain from her pregnancy has the most to do with it. I want to take her out and let her know she his an amazing, astoundingly beautiful woman. Can anyone help me out??? If you know of any studios in the L.A. area or any websites it would be much appreciated.
    Thank You.

  2. JK Said,

I don’t know studios, but I wanted to tell you I think it’s a wonderful idea, and I think she’ll love it. Looking back on my own pregnancy photos is really fun, especially since the weight does come off! :) Good luck, and happy 2007.

I am photographer with JC Penney’s Portrait Studios, Unfortunately in Michigan- but I have done some beautiful maternity portraits. We are run by a company called Life-touch and are also in some Target stores. Ask to photograph with the manager or seasoned photographer - stop in an ask to see our FOCUS magazines that showcase our photoraghers and real customers. And whats really nice is that were very affordable, with great quality. If your in the Detroit area I’d Love to take them, belly shots are one of my favorites! oh, and let your beautiful wife read what you wrote about her - as a mother of three, i know how nice it is to hear your husband thinks your beautiful even if you don’t feel it. Congrates & take good care of that sweet baby!
