Anybody have excruciating back pain or cramps during early pregnancy?

I've read a lot about mild cramping and lower back pain during pregnancy, but has anyone else had lying on the bathroom floor crying, screaming obscenities at the top of your lungs back pain? I'm probably only 4 wks along, no spotting or bleeding or anything. It comes & goes, I'm doing pretty good most of the time but every few hours it'll hit and I'm curled up into a little ball for 10-15 minutes till it subsides. I have an appt Tues with a midwife; I called her a few days ago and she talked a bit about miscarriage but never really said that's what's going on, just wanted me to be aware that 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. She's pretty anti-med and discouraged Tylenol, though I have cheated and taken it when the pain gets really bad (doesn't seem to help though). Been using ice packs on my back (hope that's ok?), heating pad seemed to make it worse. Just made my poor hubby go get stool softener, though I don't think that's the problem either. Any advice, is this normal?

i had really really bad back pain in early pregnancy… it was sooo bad that (before we suspected pregnancy) everyone thought i might have had a pinched nerve or something… it did get better as time went on….. congrats … good luck… and i hope you feel better soon….

*pretty soon you're back pain will come from being bent over the toilet all day… LoL…..

I had something similiar - I am now 8 months pregnant. However, I had similiar symptoms when i was not pregnant, and they have not been diagnosed as anything because they are not regular enough - mine were once a night every two to three months, but had it every few nights when i was first pregnant, as well as tiny bits of spotting. However, mine was more in the lower front abdomen and not the back. Either way, it sounds like your intestines, especially because the uterus grows forward and you are feeling it in your back. I found that laying on my side in the bathtub with slightly cool - room temp shower running over me from the shoulders down helped a lot. Try that, and if you want to, email me tailkinker42 at yahoo.com. Not sure what help i can be, because as i've already mentioned, whatever has plagued me happens when i'm not pregnant and has not been diagnosed, but i can listen. Helen

From the sounds of what you're explaining, it kinda sounds like you may have a kidney stone. I had one, not while I was pregnant, but it's VERY bad pains in your lower stomach & lower back that will come & go. I had no idea what it was before & thought maybe it was just gas pains so bought some Gas-x & it didn't help. Went to the ER & found out I did have a kidney stone. That's really the only thing I could think of that fits your description. I don't think it has anything to do with miscarriage otherewise you would probably be bleeding. But I would definitely get to see a doctor or go to the ER if it still hurts by tomorrow.

That happened to me a few times after sex when I was around 5 weeks and wasn't even really sure If I was pregnant it was really strange and I didn't know what it was- I now know that- that is what a contraction feels like. I can't even describe the feeling. It felt like a huge boulder was going to try to come out. It happened only a few times and I never curled up I would jump and then fall it was pretty crazy thinking back on it. I never even thought about going to the drs I just thought I was getting sick or something. Knowing what I know now though I would have gone to the Dr. right away- or atleast called.
