What causes break through bleeding in pregnancy?

Like when you hear that women got their “periods” while pregnant…what causes this period like bleeding? and for anyone who has had this…did you ever pass clots?? I would be really interested to know the little details of what is was like…

thanks!

Hey, I have bled twice, once at 7 weeks and once at 18 weeks. These were both caused by having a water infection both times.

My doctor explained that water infections corroded my cervix slightly which is why I had the bleeding. The 1st time I passed two small clots that were about half the size of a 5pence piece, but the second time there were no clots, just bright red blood.

In the 1st month I was pregnant (before I knew I was pregnant) I had a small period but it only lasted like 3days as I usually had periods that lasted more like 5days……

Hope this helps :) xx

FAO first bubs due 02.05.09 - Yes urine infection, sorry I refer to it as a water infection… Yep thats what caused my bleeding both times, but I would go 2 your doc and get checked out just in case, Hey im due a couple of weeks before you :) Baby due 20.03.2009 xx

It’s just hormones…every woman’s body is different. Unless a woman is more prone to miscarriages, then she needs to rest when she sees spotting while pregnant. And I only passed a couple of blood clots after I gave birth when I was doing too much too soon.

Most bleeding in pregnancy is just spotting, frequently caused by sex or an internal exam, and nothing to be concerned about. Any heavier bleeding is cause for alarm and an immediate call to the doc or trip to the hospital. These could be signs of miscarriage, preterm labor, placental separation, etc.

I just asked my wife how to answer your question, as we’ve had 5 children…In early pregnancy, breakthrough bleeding is common as your hormones adjust, clots are NOT common and should be taken up with your midwife immediately. Any bleeding at whatever stage of pregnancy, late pregnancy in particular should always be reported to your health professional immediately. Take no chances is the best advice my wife can give to you. All the best, let us know how it goes. Em and Doug

I was put on bed rest from November to May when my twins were born (full term and healthy), because the little monsters were VERY active and I’d been ’spotting’ almost constantly. The docs didn’t want to take any chances with me losing them so I did as I was told.

The spotting started at the same time as the ‘growth spurt’ around 13/14 weeks, when I was unable to lift my feet off the floor, let alone walk on them! They completely jammed the tendons in my lower abdomen/upper thighs and moving anything below the waist was excruciatingly painful.

If you’ve got constant pain, spotting or bleeding, don’t keep it to yourself. Go to see your doctor who’ll tell you whether to worry about it or not. I’d had horrendous trouble getting pregnant in the first place, there was no way I was going to risk losing them. And they were worth every moment - my beautiful boys.
